Oral history interview with Edward A. Stern, Feb. 9, 1997.

Stern describes his early years and education in Detroit, Michigan, his graduate work at the California Institute of Technology, and his teaching career at the University of Washington. He discusses his efforts on behalf of Russian Jewish Refusenik scientists in depth. He made weekly telephone calls to Refuseniks whose applications to the Soviet government for permission to emigrate to Israel had been denied and publicized their plight. He talks about his involvement with Jewish students at the University of Washington, including the Jewish student-led movement to remove the Organization of Arab Students from the Minority Affairs Commission and efforts to counteract the statment "Zionism Is Racism." Stern also discusses his tenure as president of the Board of the University of Washington Hillel Foundation and the embezzlement investigation concerning a member of the Hillel staff.
